Hyundai Kona Goes Head-to-Head Against Honda, Kia, and Subaru -- Which Compact SUV Reigns Supreme?

If you're looking for a small SUV that's big on the capabilities, safety features, amenities, and technologies everyone needs for the eastern Massachusetts drive, look no further than the new Hyundai Kona. Even among other new Hyundai cars and SUVs, it stands out. That's because it checks every box: it's fun to drive, fuel-efficient for long trips, and best of all, it comes backed by one of the most all-inclusive warranties in the industry. Check out how well it fares against rivals like Honda HR-V, Kia Niro, and Subaru Crosstrek, and you'll see what we mean.

Hyundai Kona vs. Honda HR-V

  • A spirited 147-horsepower, 2.0-liter inline-four engine comes standard in Kona SE and at the midrange, ready to deliver 132 pound-feet of torque. HR-V only puts out 141 horsepower and 127 pound-feet, making Kona the faster and better accelerator.
  • Hyundai SmartSense, our automaker's exclusive driver-assist suite, comes standard in every Kona trim, bringing with it forward collision-avoidance assist, a lane-keep assist feature, and a driver attention warning system. You can get comparable features in HR-V, but only at the midrange, in HR-V EX and later.
  • Available driver aids in Kona range from warnings for your blind spot and rear cross traffic to lane change assist and pedestrian detection. Plus, there's a parking distance warning that works great with its standard rear-view camera and parking guidance. HR-V doesn't offer any of these.

Hyundai Kona vs. Kia Niro

  • With a turbocharged 175-horsepower, 1.6-liter I4 engine standard in Limited and later trims, prepared to churn out 195 pound-feet, Kona is the more capable ride. Niro only puts out 139 horsepower across the board.
  • Both models are comparable tech-wise. Kona features a standard 7-inch display audio touchscreen, with Ultimate trims offering an 8-inch model with integrated navigation. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard, while dual front USB ports, wireless device charging, a heads-up display, and eight-speaker Infinity premium audio are available. Niro, however, only builds in one front USB port, and no heads-up display option exists. That means Kona has more connectivity for electronics, and its driving metrics are easier to review.

Hyundai Kona vs. Subaru Crosstrek

  • The 175-horsepower, 1.6-liter I4 turbo engine in Kona Limited and later enables it to breeze past Crosstrek backed by 195 pound-feet of torque. The latter's ratings are only 152 horsepower and 145 pound-feet, and you can only get up to 148 horsepower in trims like Crosstrek Hybrid.
  • Between them, Kona gets better fuel economy. Count on up to 28 mpg in a city like Plymouth, 33 mpg down the highway to locales like Brockton or Taunton, and 30 mpg combined between spots like Attleboro and Mansfield. Crosstrek gets only up to 23 mpg city and 29 mpg highway with the manual transmission in base trims, and only up to 27 mpg city with the Lineatronic CVT in step-up trims.
  • Hyundai SmartSense forward collision-avoidance assist, lane-keep assist, and driver attention warning features come standard in every new Kona. In Crosstrek, similar features like pre-collision brakes and lane-keep assist come standard only in the midrange and later, and there's no driver attention warning offered.
  • Kona features a 7-inch display audio touchscreen standard and makes dual front USB ports, wireless device charging, and a heads-up display available. That makes it the right choice for staying connected and entertained on the go. The STARLINK system in Crosstrek, on the other hand, measures only 6.5 inches; there's only one USB port; no wireless charger if offered, and a heads-up display doesn't appear anywhere in the lineup.
